Welcome to the music class web page! I am glad you dropped by, and I hope you'll visit periodically throughout the year.
My name is Karla Dunning, and I am very excited to be joining the Selwyn family for this 2010-11 school year! I will be working with all the students in the Lower School, as well as PreK 3 and PreK 4 classes, and I can't wait to get started!
Having lots of musical experiences as a child gave me a very early love for anything that had beat, rhythm, or melody. By 8th grade, I had made the decision to become a music educator, and took every opportunity to learn more about music and teaching music before starting in the music education program at the University of North Texas. After earning my Bachelors degree from the UNT College of Music, I completed 3 summers of course work to earn my Kodály certification, a training that has proven invaluable as I've helped children learn music naturally, the way they learn language. I taught elementary music in Little Elm ISD for 7 years, and had the privilege of staying in the same school, with the same students. As my students grew through their grade levels, my favorite part was watching their musicianship develop, and my passion for developing the natural musicianship in children got stronger.
I resigned from Little Elm in 2008, to help my husband in the daily operations of our music store, and to start classes for pre-school aged children. I attended Musikgarten training that summer, and earned my certification to teach music classes for newborns through 5-year-olds, and have been teaching in preschools and in a small-group private setting for the last two years.
I am very excited for the opportunity at Selwyn, to not only work with children from the PreK and the Lower School, but also to work in smaller class sizes on a more frequent basis. It's going to be a great year for music! I hope your children come home and share lots of songs with you!
